Alabama A&M University is proud to become the first institution in Alabama to offer three distinct mathematics pathways – STEM Mathematics, Big Data Mathematics, and Life Mathematics – designed to better serve students’ diverse academic interests and career trajectories.
Starting this fall, the new pathways aim to provide tailored, relevant, and accessible
routes to mathematical proficiency and career readiness.

“These pathways represent a transformative step in how we prepare students for both
their academic journeys and future careers,” said Dr. Tau Kadhi, Associate Vice President for Academic Administration and Dean of Graduate Studies.
“By aligning mathematics education with student goals and workforce needs, AAMU is
ensuring that every student has the tools to succeed.”

The initiative grew from vision and collaboration – initially led by Kadhi and refined
through weekly meetings of AAMU’s Mathematics Curriculum Committee, said Dr. Yinshu Wu, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Program Coordinator in the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

“Our goal was to create mathematics pathways that better align with students’ degree
programs and address the diverse needs of different majors,” Dr. Wu, who has taught
at AAMU since 2011, explained. “Different majors require different levels and types
of mathematical knowledge, and these pathways help students focus on the content most
relevant to their fields. Ultimately, it ensures that all students gain the quantitative
skills necessary for their academic and career success.”

The new pathways align with national trends in higher education reform and are part
of AAMU’s ongoing commitment to academic innovation and student success.

  • STEM Mathematics Pathway: Designed for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and
    mathematics, this track emphasizes calculus readiness, analytical reasoning, and advanced
    problem-solving.
  • Big Data Mathematics Pathway: Responding to the growing demand for data-driven decision-making, this pathway prepares
    students for careers in analytics, business intelligence, and emerging technologies
    by focusing on statistics, data literacy, and quantitative modeling
  • Life Mathematics Pathway: Created for non-STEM majors, this option provides practical math skills for everyday
    life and careers in the social sciences, humanities, and other applied fields, emphasizing
    financial literacy, logic, and real-world problem-solvi

Academic advisors will help students select the pathway that best aligns with their
academic program and future goals.

This initiative also reflects AAMU’s partnership with the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE) and the Alabama Articulation and General Studies Committee (AGSC) as part of a statewide pilot effort to modernize mathematics education across Alabama.
