About the Guest Editors | Remote sensing our citiesYang Ju, PhD, Nanjing University, China

Yang Ju is an Assistant Professor in the School of Geography and Ocean Science at Nanjing University. Dr. Ju explores the interactions between socioeconomic status, the built environment, and population health. His interests include: (1) mapping the built and socioeconomic environments of cities in historically data-sparse regions using government records, remote sensing, and volunteered geographic information; (2) understanding how the built environment shapes disparities in residents’ exposure to environmental hazards; (3) analyzing the relationship between the built environment and public health through the lens of environmental justice and quasi-experimental research designs. Dr. Ju has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Data since 2024.

Alvin Christopher Galang Varquez, DEng, Institute of Science Tokyo, Japan

Alvin C G Varquez is an Associate Professor at the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering at the Institute of Science Tokyo, formerly the Tokyo Institute of Technology. His primary research interests encompass global urban climatology, climate change, weather modeling of urban areas, and GIS database construction. Dr. Varquez proposed Global Urban Climatology (GUC) as a distinct subfield to uniformly assess and understand urban heat islands and climates across diverse global cities. His foundational contributions include developing the AH4GUC dataset, a high-resolution, global 1-km map projecting present and future hourly anthropogenic heat fluxes. Dr. Varquez has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Data since 2025.
