Marco Claassens, I am the founder and managing director of Miner Construction Draughting Academy, and a mechanical Draughtsman with over 15 years’ experience in the mining industry.

I am specialized in multi – engineering disciplines including:

Conveyer design and detailing
Plate work / material handling design and detailing
3D building and coordinating

About me:
I graduated from a draughting academy in 2008.
Thereafter I worked my way through 2 years in an engineering workshop and sites gaining practical knowledge and skills. For the last 14 years I have been employed at one of the best mining project houses in the world, DRA Global, working my way through multiple engineering disciplines.

During the Covid 19 pandemic lock down I read a post stating “if you are working remote due to the lock down and have not made the most of all the spare time you have now, then you have lost out on a great opportunity”, and I took a hard look at myself and realized I had not done anything with the incredible gift of ‘time’. This is when I tried to start a small engineering sales business, but without love and passion for sales the business idea was unsuccessful, feeling despondent but not defeated I went back to the ‘drawing board’.

One day the lady who helps me at home asked if her son is allowed to visit and wash our cars to keep busy and make extra money. While he was there, he walked past my work station and saw me busy at work, being a draughtsman; he asked me if I could teach him. I then spent the next 3 months teaching him basic technical drawing skills. Then moved on to using basic CAD, To my surprise he was already performing tasks that a junior draughtsman was require to perform.

This is when the penny dropped. If I could teach this young person without any prior skills I could help others in the same way. I wrote a business plan, came up with a name, registered the business and Miner Construction Draughting Academy was born in 2021.

I hand delivered pamphlets to local schools advertising a non-accredited mentorship program, purely to gain skills, after work hours.

Fast forward to 2025, Miner Constriction Draughting Academy is a registered private academy, through construction CETA and QCTO with 150 students, first year students and second year students.

Education and skills are the vital steps in everyone’s life; however I have even bigger hopes and dreams to expand the business into the employment sector to create something even more special.

My mission is to grow and develop our youth wanting to go into engineering or architecture in to experienced professionals.

I want them to value the time we are given to learn as much as possible.

Lastly, I pray I open doors in the engineering and architecture employment sectors that each and every one of Miner Constructions Draughting Academy graduates deserve, to better their and their families lives.
