MSU introduces compulsory internship for civil engineering students

Vadodara: For the first time, the civil engineering department at MS University’s Faculty of Technology and Engineering has introduced compulsory internships for final-semester BE (civil) students, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP).All 125 final-year students have been deputed to civil-engineering-related organisations for on-site training. The placements span both public and private sector companies, with major govt bodies—including ONGC, the Gujarat govt’s roads & buildings department, and the Gujarat Pollution Control Board—offering internship positions for the first time.Officials said the student placements were aligned with key civil engineering domains such as building planning, highway and transportation engineering, geotechnical design, environmental engineering, construction management, and structural analysis.“Students were deputed based on their academic interests and preferred areas of exposure,” said prof Dhanesh Patel, dean of the Faculty of Technology and Engineering. He added that many students interning with private firms will also receive stipends during their training.According to Patel, the internship programme will give students hands-on experience, allow them to apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios, build professional skills, and boost their confidence in workplace practices.“Upon completing the internship, students are expected to be industry-ready for professional roles as civil engineers,” he said.
