Hyderabad: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued new guidelines urging universities and engineering colleges across India to upgrade their teaching methods in line with emerging technology trends. Special attention is being given to Computer Science and its allied courses such as Cybersecurity and Data Science, which are attracting the majority of engineering admissions in recent years.

Engineering Admission Trends – Shift Towards Computer Science

Engineering admissions in India have seen a dramatic shift.

  • In 2020-21, 42% of students opted for Computer Science and related courses, while core engineering branches dominated admissions.
  • By 2024-25, this trend reversed — 71% of students chose Computer Science and emerging technology branches.
  • In 2025-26, India has 15,98,245 engineering seats, with nearly 90% of the newly added seats belonging to Computer Science and IT-related courses.

This shift has created a surge in demand for industry-relevant teaching methods in advanced tech fields.

Cybersecurity – Rapidly Changing but Poorly Taught

AICTE has expressed concern that Cybersecurity education in most engineering colleges remains outdated and basic. The rapid evolution of network security systems, cryptography, ethical hacking, and firewall technologies demands constant updates.

  • Global companies are now implementing microchip-level security and using advanced cryptographic modules.
  • Ethical hacking tools and digital forensics have advanced significantly, yet most colleges haven’t updated their curriculum or lab infrastructure to match industry needs.

Data Science – High Demand, Low Quality

While Data Science is one of the most sought-after branches, AICTE notes a lack of depth in teaching.

  • Many students choose it without strong fundamentals in mathematics.
  • Industry tools like Python, R, Power BI, and D3.js are now essential, but their advanced applications are rarely taught.
  • Graduates often fail to meet the skill requirements of Big Data companies due to insufficient exposure to real-world data visualization and analytics.

AICTE’s Recommendations for Upgrading Engineering Education

To bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, AICTE has recommended:

  • Online faculty training in emerging tech.
  • Collaboration with software industry professionals for skill-based workshops.
  • Setting up digital laboratories to track and learn the latest global tech trends.
  • Partnering with research institutions and Big Data companies for advanced training modules.

According to Dr. K. Vijay Kumar Reddy, Rector, JNTU-Hyderabad:

“Engineering teaching must evolve with market needs. Professional skills must be integrated into the curriculum alongside theoretical knowledge to ensure quality and employability.”
