Future of smart motorways in limbo
There are already around 375 miles of smart motorways across the UK including 235 miles without a hard shoulder
Over two years ago, the Government announced ‘smart motorways’ would be rolled out across England by 2025.
However following a recent Transport Committee report, the Government has said it will pause the rollout of smart motorway schemes until five years worth of safety data has been collected.
This follows recent doubts that replacing the hard shoulder with all-lane running motorways may prove a safety risk.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps says during this time, he will ensure all existing ALR smart motorways are equipped with best-in-class technology and resources and are as safe as they can possibly be.
What are smart motorways?
Smart motorway is a term given to sections of motorway in the UK that use a variety of technology and active traffic management (ATM) techniques to regulate traffic flow and ease congestion.
These techniques include varying speed limits controlled by speed cameras. These are introduced to control traffic flow when there is congestion, or if there is a hazard ahead.
