Girl Scouts of America, Montana and Wyoming (GSMW) has expanded its headquarters in Billings, Montana, with a new garage building and parking lot.

The new elements are adjacent to the organization’s existing office/administration building which was formerly a family home. That building provides operational space for staff and a jumping-off point for programming.

The DJC last reported on the project when it broke ground in April 2023. Hulteng CCM was the general contractor.

The expansion is designed by Cushing Terrell, which is headquartered in Billings but also has a large office in downtown Seattle, in partnership with civil engineer Sanderson Stewart. Cushing Terrell worked on the project on a pro-bono basis. Team members from across the firm helped with the creative vision, including in Seattle.

The parking lot will support the organization’s annual cookie distribution.

The existing HQ wasn’t quite meeting the organization’s needs. GSMW serves more than 10,000 girls in Billings and communities across Montana and Wyoming, and they needed more room to accommodate the regional member base. They also needed space to park a new fleet of vehicles that safely carry girl scouts to educational, entrepreneurship, and outdoor programs, and support the ever-critical annual cookie distribution.

An existing home was demolished to make way for the new garage and parking lot. GSMW owns both the original HQ and expansion site.

The new custom designed garage and parking lot successfully fulfills the operational needs of the organization while maintaining visual alignment with the existing office on-site and acknowledging the high street level visibility of the new structure. “(Its) not flashy but streamlined and extremely functional,” Cushing Terrel shared in a news release.

“This was a really fun project to be part of,” Darren Johnson, Cushing Terrell project manager, said. “It’s exciting to think of the many things these Girl Scouts may accomplish one day; maybe even working on projects just like this one at Cushing Terrell!”
