Dougall Baillie Associates (DBA), one of Scotland’s largest independent engineering consultancies, has been taken over by three long-serving directors following the buyout.
Scott MacPhail, civil engineering director, Alan Ferns, structural engineering director, and Stuart Harrow, transportation director, have together spent more than 70 years at the firm and will now lead the company.

Mr MacPhail said: “While this is a momentous moment for the three of us and for the firm, it will be very much business as usual as we maintain continuity for our client base and seek to continue the firm’s steady growth trajectory.”
They take over from Fergus Adams, who has led the business for 16 years, first as part of a trio and later as sole owner.
Mr Adams will remain with the company as a non-equity holding director.
Glasgow legal firm Bellwether Green handled the deal with accountancy support from Johnson Carmichael.
Mr MacPhail said: “Since its establishment in 1985 by Willard Dougall and George Baillie, Dougall Baillie Associates has maintained a policy of developing talent from within its own ranks and, in making this decision, we see ourselves as the fourth cohort of the firm’s caretakers and custodians, tasked with looking after it for the next generation.”
DBA is currently involved in large-scale projects such as Durieshill near Stirling, the largest single planning application in Scotland.
The firm employs 41 staff and is a registered training provider, offering technician and graduate apprentice schemes.
Mr Ferns said the firm is seeing growing opportunities in sustainable energy sectors, including wind farms and battery storage.
Mr Harrow said the company’s success is built on teamwork and professional development.
