TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seniors are looking for civil engineering projects for Wabash Valley organizations and companies that can be completed in teams during the 2025-2026 school year.

The project must feature at least two sub-disciplines within civil engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, and site development, said Rose-Hulman. Along with a service component to provide students with the ability to identify, investigate and address a community need.

Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Jim Hanson, said the project would ideally come from a municipality, non-profit organization or a charitable/church organization.

“Past local senior-year capstone projects have helped plan the proposed new Riley Spur trail and Vigo County Fairgrounds entrance; upgrades to Fairbanks Park and the Twelve Points and Terre Town neighborhoods in Terre Haute; and expansions for local churches,” said Rose-Hulman.

The senior-year capstone design course is an opportunity for students to work in teams of three to five with clients on a long-range project that covers the entire school year.

During September and October, students will begin investigating the client’s needs and propose a solution to them. Authorization is then granted in November, faculty project reviews begin in early April and reports are presented to clients in early May.

Rose-Hulman said projects are completed at little to no cost, but clients are asked to sign a release or waiver of liability before the project is initiated.

Ideas for projects must be submitted in writing by August 6 to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at tanner2@rose-hulman.edu. People can contact the department by email or 812-877-8817 with any questions or concerns.
