How Can BIM 3D Laser Scanning Help Restore Old Buildings and Historic Sites
Old and historical sites add character and value to a place. They are part of heritage that needs to be preserved for future generations to see and enjoy. And with the help of building information modeling (BIM) 3D laser scanning Hull, it will now be more convenient for industry experts and stakeholders to restore such buildings.

3D scanning devices emit and use lasers to capture the XYZ coordinates of a particular site, structure, or building. The data it gathers are considered to be more accurate than those from traditional methods. Through these data, 3D maps are created using BIM. Both the XYZ coordinates and 3D map files are stored in a cloud, which makes them more accessible to all concerned parties.

How 3D Scanning Can Help

The architectural Hull space has witnessed significant improvements over the past years with the emergence of technologies like 3D scanning. Here’s how it helps restore old buildings and historic sites.

More accuracy. 3D scanning doesn’t just gather accurate data on the XYZ coordinates of a site. It also captures the existing condition of the site itself — including material details. As historical buildings have older construction materials, obtaining precise information about them enables construction personnel and concerned stakeholders to develop a smart and cost-effective restoration plan.

Less risk of damage. With 3D scanning, the lasers and the scanning devices will take on the role of surveying and data gathering. This minimises the risk of getting building materials damaged in the process. Additionally, it’s also safer for site personnel. Their risk of getting injured while collecting data — especially in areas that are difficult to reach and navigate — will also be decreased.

Better data management. Data from 3D scanners are stored in a cloud. This allows for more secure and efficient data management. With an improved data management system, it will be more convenient for all the involved individuals to access and utilise these accurate data at any stage of the restoration process.
